Module 10: Belief Change and Behavioural Intervention Practice

This module brings together the knowledge and skills developed throughout the program and focuses on designing practical interventions to influence attitudes and behaviour. Participants begin by examining how beliefs are formed through direct observation, information from external sources and inferential processes. They distinguish between behavioural beliefs, normative beliefs and control beliefs and learn how each type of belief contributes to attitudes, social norms and perceived behavioural control. The module introduces formative research as a professional method for identifying the salient beliefs that are most relevant to a target population and behaviour. Participants then learn how to determine the primary driver of an unwanted or desired behaviour, establish appropriate intervention goals and select strategies that address the specific determinants identified during assessment. Intervention approaches may include persuasive communication, skills development, environmental redesign, normative influence, leadership action, reinforcement or removal of behavioural barriers. Particular emphasis is placed on evaluating whether interventions actually produce changes in beliefs, intentions and behaviour. The module concludes with a practitioner capstone in which participants prepare a complete attitude and behaviour assessment, diagnosis, intervention and evaluation plan suitable for professional or organisational application.
